The How and Why of Medication Discount Cards

Nadia JohnsonBy Nadia JohnsonNovember 23, 20131 Comment2 Mins Read

In today’s rapidly changing healthcare landscape, it’s comforting to know you do have options. The medication discount card is one of those options. If you’ve been wondering how they work or what the cards can do for you, read on.

    What the Card Does

Medication discount cards can save you anywhere from 10 to 20 percent on name brand drugs and up to 75 percent on generic drugs. For example, if you have a prescription for vyvanse, a medication discount card acts as a vyvanse coupon card that can help significantly reduce the cost of treating ADHD.

    How It Works

The great thing about a medication discount card is that first, everyone qualifies and second, it’s free. All you have to do to get started is simply print out your card. There are no health restrictions, no paperwork and you can begin using your card immediately.

The card is accepted at all U.S. pharmacy chains including Wal-Mart, Publix, CVS, Albertsons, Walgreens and Rite Aid. Additionally, most independent pharmacies accept the card as well totaling about 60,000 pharmacies across the U.S., Guam and Puerto Rico.

Why Use the Card If You Have Insurance

Even if you have insurance, often certain drugs aren’t covered such as weight loss or anti-smoking drugs. Drugs for cosmetic use are also often not covered. A medication discount card will get you savings on these drugs so you don’t have to pay full price.

Another instance in which a medication discount card can be extremely helpful is with generic drugs. A discount card cannot be used in conjunction with insurance but the discount card price might be less than your insurance co-pay. Also, if your insurance plan has a high deductible, you can use your medication discount card and apply the cost to your deductible.

With the benefits and ease of use as well as the savings, there’s no reason not to take advantage of a medication discount card.
